What is the point of the Apple Airport Express?

I am a sucker for all things Apple and their recent refresh of the Airport Express has left me wondering what is the point of this device and do many people even use it?

The new airport express can be your single router now. It can also extend your network, create a separate network or create an airplay extension to your sound system.

My original was doing network range extending into a "dark" corner of the house. But with the new one, I've deployed my old one to be a full-time AirPlay audio receiver attached to the AUX in on my home theater. The new one (like the old one) will get thrown in the notebook back when I travel to act as a travel router as needed (which is still surprisingly often). The only down side is the power cord required will make it harder to travel with but easier to deploy when I need to (the cord allowing more flexible deployments).

I've been looking at this as something I can throw under my TV, hook an external USB drive into and use it as a "cheap" DLNA server for my Google TV. There are definitely cheaper options out there, but this is the only one I've found that would allow me to get rid of my router and possibly have less clutter in my already cluttered living room.

I have 3 of the old model, I use them to create a distributed audio system around the house. A single copy of itunes runs on a PC, then iOS devices can use that to control all the speakers at once using the remote app. Works well.

Two Gotcha's:
I've had no luck with using the airport express as a wifi extender. Unless your wifi is being run by an existing airport product, I wouldn't bet on using it like that.

If you live somewhere where DSL via PPPoA is your only option for internet (UK, NZ, some parts of the US) you end up with double NATs and routing "fun" if you try to use the airport products for routing (or any ethernet router for that matter)
