What is the best wide angle lens under $1,000 for the Nikon D7000?
My favorites are the Tokina f/2.8 11-16mm or the Tokina f/4 12-24mm (the Nikkor f/4 12-24mm is pretty good too). The Tokina 12-24mm is hands down my favorite lens to shoot with.
Example shot with the 12-24:

If you want to go for a crazy fisheye effect, check out the Nikkor 10.5mm → 180 degree field of view!
gdgt links to the various lenses (so you can add them to your want list, of course...):

Review on bestocvery:
The Nikon Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 AIS Manual Focus Lens has a legendary reputation as being one of the best primes Nikon has to offer. With an aperture range of f/1.4 -16, this fast lens can handle almost any natural lighting situation a photographer could encounter. This well constructed lens was originally engineered for the fast paced world of press photography. It employs Nikon's Close-Range-Construction (CRC) to ensure that all images ensure high image quality at near focusing distances. While it might cost more than other 35mm Nikkor lenses, it has a reputation and quality metal construction to justify its price.
