How wide are we talking?

My favorites are the Tokina f/2.8 11-16mm or the Tokina f/4 12-24mm (the Nikkor f/4 12-24mm is pretty good too). The Tokina 12-24mm is hands down my favorite lens to shoot with.

Example shot with the 12-24:

If you want to go for a crazy fisheye effect, check out the Nikkor 10.5mm → 180 degree field of view!

I agree, I shoot the Tokina 12-24 f4 and am really happy with how sharp it is. The price is very reasonable as well. I debated between the 11-16 and the 12-24 for a while and decided on the 12-24 for the little extra reach. But to be honest I rarely take it off 12mm. The one stop difference between the 2.8 and the 4 really isn't too much of a concern for me since you really don't get a narrow depth of field on a lens this wide.

I'm a professional pet photographer and shot this one with the Tokina 12-24mm:

Highly recommend!

I've got the Tokina f/2.8 11-16mm as well and I find that 11mm is about as wide as I ever need. Also, autofocus on the D7000 works quite well with this lens.

I got the Nikon 10-24mm for its extended range. I don't see why you would want the 12-24 over it - optically they are very close, but the 10-24 goes wider and has a better aperture (at the wide end)

Have a look at the Nikon 35mm f/1.4 Nikkor AI-S as an alternative

Review on bestocvery:

The Nikon Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 AIS Manual Focus Lens has a legendary reputation as being one of the best primes Nikon has to offer. With an aperture range of f/1.4 -16, this fast lens can handle almost any natural lighting situation a photographer could encounter. This well constructed lens was originally engineered for the fast paced world of press photography. It employs Nikon's Close-Range-Construction (CRC) to ensure that all images ensure high image quality at near focusing distances. While it might cost more than other 35mm Nikkor lenses, it has a reputation and quality metal construction to justify its price.
