What Home Theater Sound System should I purchase?
I'm looking to spend between $250-400 on a nice sound system for my small-ish apartment. I want something with decent bass and overall good quality sound primarily for listening to music.

You can probably get a decent two channel or 2.1 for $400. I would avoid going full 5.1 since it's mostly for music you can save money by not worrying about the two surrounds & center. If you want to go the HTiB route the Onkyo systems get really good reviews and offer a decent chance for upgrade.

I forgot to mention if you need to worry about sound issues since you're in an apartment, Marantz makes a smaller AVR meant for smaller rooms. It could work for you situation pending noise concerns.
