Question about
What does the monthly charge with tivo actually pay for?
Thinking about cancelling my cable and just going with an HD antenna for local stuff, but wouldnt mind being able to dvr things still. Thought I could just purchase a tivo device, didnt realize there was a monthly cost.

Essentially it pays for the TV guide. I think a Tivo without service severely limits the usefulness unless you want to use it as a multiroom-view or Slingbox source. I guess you could record shows at fixed times, but I haven't tried that and I'm not sure what information it would give you about the program you recorded. That said, I'm a huge Tivo fan since the Series 2 and currently have an active Premiere XL, Series 3, and Pioneer DVD running. I recommend going with the lifetime service plan. If you have an existing Tivo box with lifetime, there is a current offer to pay $199 to move it to a new Premiere. If you don't have a box with lifetime, you can buy them on EBay already activated with lifetime. That way, you don't have a monthly payment and you can keep the box as long as you want. Good luck!

not sure if it's still going on but Tivo has a deal for antennae only users. I pay only $10 a month instead of the standard $20 or the $500 lifetime cost.
