I checked out several iPad cases and ended up choosing Portenzo. A lot of people have asked me about it and I love it. They make custom, hand-made cases.

I know it's terrible to hear an answer like "It depends"...but it does. Do you want to make use of your Smart Cover or do you want something to fully encase your iPad for potential drops?

I have a Smart cover as well and was debating on what to get simply to protect the back. Because the Smart already acts like a stand I didn't want anything too complicated so my choices were:

Targus Vucomplete +
www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B007C0YAWA/ref=nos...

Incipio iPad Feather:
www.incipio.com/ipad-cases-accessories/incipio-ipa...

eBay back cover:
www.ebay.com/itm/Tpu-Back-Case-Skin-Work-With-Smar...

I was set on buying the Vucomplete + but it wasn't in stock at the time (it is now on Amazon), so I instead opted for the eBay back cover. I am extremely happy with it since it fits like a glove and is not a cheap-o. It cost me much less than the Targus (including the expedited shipping).
NOTE: for some reason the seller of the back-case I purchased on eBay has increased the price from $5.99 to $107?!?...the link I included above seems to be the same case I have but just wanted to provide a full disclosure.

If you're looking for something to lay your iPad while in bed to watch movies there are better options that rotate the iPad so you don't have to keep it in landscape mode.

If you want something to protect the tablet from a potential apocalypse then the Otterbox Form series is excellent, except it's not exactly sleek.

In the end, take your time figuring out how you'll use the iPad to understand the case that will fit your needs.
