Not fond of the name, but then again, given time, I'm sure I won't care what the name is. I'm sure it will be another fun console, but this time with a better selection of hardcore games (so it seems) and the always awesome selection of first party Nintendo games.

As much as I'd love to know the specs of the console itself, I know that the "console" itself is no longer important. All the platforms are now more than powerful enough to provide some great looking games and functionality. This is why Nintendo did not even talk about the console itself. The console is a vehicle, it's the games and the controller that really make the difference. If it plays great looking games, and they play well (or even in a new and unique way), that's all that matters to me.

It looks to me like Nintendo is continuing to accomplish exactly what they set out to do. Expand the market, and drive new experiences.

I'm eager to learn more about the new console. I think there are a lot of interesting game possibilities here.

On first glance the controller definitely looks strange, though that seems to be the norm for any interface mechanisms that Nintendo introduces these days; console or portable.

it looks like Nintendo is really scared of:

1. people playing their android/iphone/smartphone games in front of the tv

2. people playing their android/apple/misc. tablet in front of the tv

3. kids getting kicked off the tv so they can't play games to begin with

4. parents watching tv/streaming media/blu-ray on their tivo/ps3/xbox on the tv

5. people thinking the only way to play touchscreen nintendo games is on small ds screens

6. missing out on those hot tablet $$$$

7. that really high 1080p HDTV adoption rate

8. leaping forward technologically: resistive touchscreen, uses all of wii's old peripherals, old cpu, old gpu, old media (proprietary, non-blu-ray Wii U discs)

9. people keeping their Wii's in the dust or getting rid of any Wii hardware altogether

10. being thought of as the company thats basically first party only

I'm not a Nintendo hater. In fact, I love them and their products and their games. These were just thoughts I had when I saw what Project Cafe turned out to be. I understand that the Wii U will be easy to "drop into" a previous Wii setup. This also means the hardware is only as good as the 2006 wii remotes or the new wii motion plus remotes. There will be fragmentation problems because of that.

Also, its not that big of a deal, but I almost wish blu-ray wasn't a sony developed technology so these companies could use it without having to eat crow.... it would have made all of this so much easier....

also also, if the Wii U turns out to be awesome, then it will solve a lot of the problems I listed here.... Lord knows that I've spent a lot of time in front of the TV playing games on my android Epic instead of the proper game consoles installed which offer AAA games and 1080p visuals....

The Wii U is a terrible name for a console but if the graphics and online experience are as good as they say it is, possibly count me in.

I find it pretty interesting that Nintendo decided to essentially make a gimped tablet (gimped being that you have to be attached to a console). I think the big issue is in pricing and time of release. If it's not priced accordingly, meaning something under $250 for the whole setup, then it might be destined for failure.

I know people might not think they compete, but with the Wii U, I'm pretty convinced that Apple and Nintendo are now, more than ever going to be pretty close competitors. If Apple were to release an app store for the Apple TV, which would enhance games on both portable iOS devices and the Apple TV, sooner than Nintendo would, then this might be a death knell for Nintendo. Pricing might ultimately turn this into a moot point and it could be an awesome experience for gaming.

In terms of gaming, I find it pretty disheartening that none of the videos of the "games" that were shown were from the actual console itself (weren't there rumors that Nintendo was working pretty close with third parties?) and instead footage was shown from the PS3/360 equivalents (is the Wii U doomed to being the port machine?). It's not confidence inducing.

Finally, Nintendo desparately needs to fix their social features (does anyone even use this). Friend codes need to be gutted and it should be easy to interact with your far away friends and it doesn't look like Nintendo is ever going to be working on any of this.

Edit: Looks like Nintendo might be ditching friend codes in favor of gamertag like online profiles

I think it's more than that, since they said it takes advantage of the latest high definition "technologies" - there's gotta be a new actual console that works WITH the tablet, right??

I was hoping for a much more complete picture of how this is all going to work. Overall it seemed very concept-ish, and with a lot still unanswered. And they didn't really have anything to show as far as games go. From the rumors, it sounded as if they already had a lot of game studios working on titles for the system but we just didn't see any of that. Obviously the system will come, and so will games, but I was just hoping for a more solid idea of what we can expect.

It's still way to early too tell. I feel like it's still in a concept stage and without any hardware details or actual gameplay footage, you can only speculate right now. The potential is huge but so was the potential for the Dreamcast and GameCube.

No pricing or availability does makes me very wary of this. The other issue is how much will this be? The Wii was $250 at launch and then you needed the Wiimote and nunchuck which brought the price to $40 for each additional controller. Then there was the WiiMotionPlus addon which brought the total price to $60.

All in all, I don't see this going for less than $80 for each controller.

Cautious, yet interested to watch what will happen.

First of all, the new U logo is incredibly phallic.

Second of all, this new controller looks totally insane and expensive. I'm wondering if the cost is going to be up in the Kinect range. I'm certain that they will sell a ton of these things, but it looks really gimmicky.

At first glance, it looks like something with a lot of potential. The things you could do with a secondary screen like inventory control for RPG's, play selection on Madden, Rear view mirror in driving games, or ever one gets their own screen in Golden eye.

However, I think two things will cause this do be more or a gimmick and die out like the Wii motion controller craze. It will be under utilized, poorly implemented, and chances are those controllers are going to cost way too much for most casual gamers to afford extra controllers.

I like the remote idea, looks great. It reminds me allot of the Dreamcast days [still one of the best consoles of all time], just bigger/better. The fact that it's going to be backwards compatible makes it a sure buy for me.

I believe the New Controller will be where everyone wants to play, probably because there will only be one New Controller in use for each game (vs. up to 4 Wiimotes). but then, many times, the New Controller will complement, instead of replace, the Wiimote.
also, it's good that the Wii U will AT LAST get HD, though I'm still not a fan of the thing it won't play movies on DVD/Blu-ray.

It's a good idea but the Wii Controller needs to look more "adult". I can't see myself using the controller outside of gaming, despite the potential for the controller to be used like a tablet. And in an industry so full of convergence, a dedicated gaming device may be the last thing people are interested in. That said, Nintendo stands to compete with Apple better with these small bite sized apps. Think of all the great games on iOS devices like Sword and Sworcery, Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds Etc, and how easy it would be to port these over to the Wii U for the controller and console.

Interestingly, theres nothing stopping Sony from doing exactly what the Wii U is doing with the new Vita. It has a touchscreen, it has dual analog sticks, and you might already have the console mate. Nothing I saw from the Nintendo conference looked like it couldn't potentially be done on the Vita + PS3.

I wonder now if Microsoft will even bother with a portable solution. Windows Phone 7 is largely unrecognized as a gaming platform. They spent so much time on Kinect this year, they seem to be ignoring a large demographic.
