What are the latest guidelines for rooting the Nook Color and flashing Gingerbread?

Just got one today. I know the potential it has when rooted, and I wanna root it as fast as possible with ease. What are the latest instructions for rooting?

The best solution is still to run CM7 on the thing if you are looking to root it and wipe out EMMC. The B&N app was just updated to allow you to read color magazines through it but as someone else pointed out it still does not support childrens books.

If I were you I would wait and hold off until the next official release of CM7 for one specific reason: Battery life. The current stable version for the NC has a bug in it that does not allow the NC to achieve deep sleep, thus your battery life is greatly reduced compared to the stock rom. They have it fixed and properly working in the newest nightlies but that also means other things will break because it's only in beta.

XDA Developers is a better forum in the terms of following the developing process of the ROMS than Android Central is since that's where you will usually find any developer for Android stuff. Android Central is a good resource for simple Q&A or trying to get more laymen term answers.

Obviously Google and click around from there, but that should get you started. It's really quite simple, I didn't have any issues doing mine. All you need is a MicroSD card you don't care about formatting (although after you're done with the rooting you can of course use it again for other things).

The only caveat, and it is pretty minor, is that children's books don't work once you go to Gingerbread. The reason is that you'll then have to use the standard Android nook app, not the special one they have on their build of Android. Up until a couple weeks ago magazines didn't work either, but thankfully Barnes and Noble have enabled those on higher res devices in the standard Android nook app, so they are fully functional now. Regular books work fine.

Good luck!

I read Android Central, and they have a large community of hackers/rooters in their forums that can usually help you out.
