Cheap-ish and NAS don't always relate to the best experience. Smallnetbuilder provides really good reviews of various NAS devices and does various forms of R/W testing on the devices to get a good idea of expected performance.
The Synology 2-bay devices are on the lower end of price that have solid reviews for performance and management.

Take a look at Drobo. I have a few of these for my photo library and they work great. Easy to manage and very reliable. They have both network attached and computer attached. In my setup, one Drobo is connected to my editing machine and another is on the network. The Drobo software allows me to schedule backups and the two units are mirror images of each other.
