Question about

What adapter do you need to connect to an external HDTV using HDMI signal?

Would the ones available from Apple or Kainex also give me the <AUDIO> on the HDMI signal using one of their adapters?

Has anybody tested this...

If so, please reply...

Thanks in advance,
Baksharp.

For the mid-2010 MacBook Pros and MacBooks (including the Air) as well as the iMac, you only need a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (I use the Moshi <store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5O...> one) and HDMI cable as these support both audio and video over HDMI. Works great.

Since Mini Displayport doesn't support audio out, you'll need something that can extract audio from the device, either by USB or 3.5mm cable. Amazon is selling something like this, though I don't know how well it works:

For video, you need:

- HDMI cable
- Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter

For audio, you need:

- Mini-to-RCA y-cable. Connect the mini end to the laptop's headphone ports and the RCA ends to the L & R jacks on the HDTV

i picked up a cheap minidisplay port to hdmi adapter from amazon for like $5 with shipping. it does the job and i can verify that it transmits audio through the hdmi port. if you wanted 5.1 surround, you could use a mini-toslink to toslink cable ($2 on amazon) to hook up to a surround sound. keep in mind that the content you're playing needs to have 5.1 channels encoded in the file itself, otherwise it will just play in stereo. no need to pay for the moshi or kanex cables. overpriced for what they do.
