Question about
Video Quality
Question: Bought a Flip MinoHD and returned it because I was really unhappy with the video quality once I got it on my computer and went full screen. Been looking at the Zi8, what's the video quality like once it's off the camera???
I have the Zi8 and think that the video quality is good, but not great. When i full screen it on a 23" monitor there are noticeable compression artifacts but not so much that it really takes away from the experience.

I've noticed it depends on the lighting; I took some video indoors during Christmas and then some outside at the beach; the beach video looked sharper to me than the indoor stuff. I think that you may be a little disappointed with the HD quality off of these rigs no matter what, these cameras just aren't the best when it comes to HD video.
That being said, we wouldn't return ours at all. Big fans of the ZI8.

Yeah my big complaint with the zi8 is the low light quality.. I auto bumps the ISO rating way high so you get a lot of blocky grainy ness even though its technically "1080p"... however in well lit areas indoors or outdoors the video does look great. A tiny bit of artifacting at some points but really what do you expect from an inexpensive hand held pocketable video cam that does HD.

What I really don't want is for me to throw the video up on my computer and it look like I shot it with my Droid.

Yeah, I agree with others. I have the Zi6, but it also shoots 1080p. The video looks good as long as you're in a well lit environment, (i.e., outdoors). Once the sun starts going down or you start shooting in doors, the video becomes insanely noisy. Unfortunately, all the handheld digital video cameras suffer from this.
The other issue is the rolling shutter effect. If you move the camera too fast or try to film something moving really fast, the video looks kind of like wobbling jello. More info on that here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_shutter
Again, all the handheld digital video cameras suffer from this!
That's not to say that the Zi8 will be a bad camera. It's still a good deal for what it does, and I've been happy with my Zi6 under a variety of scenarios.
