Using the S90 with Aperture

I have been using Aperture to manage my RAW files from my Nikon D80 for about a year now. I bought the S90 and realized that Aperture does not support its RAW files (but oddly enough it does support the G11). Has anyone ran into this problem? Have you found an elegant solution? How do you handle the barrel distortion?

Apple just came out with many RAW updates today - now supports Canon Powershot S90

Go to software update and download 'em!

Note: Updates only for the newly announced Aperture 3 and also iPhoto '09.

Yeah, for Apple's photo applications, we're kind of at the whim of their release schedule. Until they push a camera update, we won't be able to use the S90's CR2 (RAW) files in Aperture or iPhoto. It's definitely annoying!

Adobe just pushed an update, so the S90's RAW files will work in Lightroom or Photoshop. However, if you're workflow is already centered around the Apple Aperture software, this is an inconvenient solution. Nothing to do but wait it out.

But do Aperture and Lightroom correct the barrel distortion? Cause I downloaded the latest version of Adobe's DNG converter and it converted the CR2 file to DNG but it didn't software correct the pretty massive barrel distortion coming from the S90's lens. I don't mind this barrel distortion if I don't notice it but I definitely don't want to have to deal with it.

Out of the box, neither Aperture or Lightroom will correct barrel distortion. There are some plugins you can purchase for either application that will correct for barrel and pincushion distortion. Photoshop also has the ability to correct for this, as does a (rather expensive) program called DxO Optics Pro.

The new RAW format that the S90 uses does support additional metadata for barrel distortion correction. That's why we had to wait for an update to Lightroom and Adobe Camera RAW for support for the S90 (I'm running both and barrel distortion is corrected automatically in my workflow).

You can use Canon's Digital Photo Professional that came with you camera (v3.7 or higher) to correct barrel distortion for your S90 RAW photos until Aperture supports it.

Well, I have been using Aperture to edit and manage my pictures, so when I got my S90 I was surprised to see that it was not supported. I decided to do something about it, and today I came up with this solution.

The good thing about it is that since the CR2 files are now directly imported into Aperture, you can use any Aperture plug-in to edit them.

And the solution is simple enough to not become a hassle. Just one quick pre-processing step before importing the images into Aperture

I hope you find it useful.

Hi Liz,

What does your workflow look like? I need to do something to address barrel distortion before importing into Aperture 3 (since I don't like the $80 plugin to do it natively in Aperture). Anyway to convert to DNG and apply barrel distortion in Camera Raw, then import into Aperture maintaining the correction?

I really want to have both corrected barrel distortion while maintaining the raw file for future edits in Aperture.

Not that I am asking much ;)

Hey blaircook! It's not too much to ask, but I do use Lightroom and not Aperture, so I'm not too sure how helpful that will be to you! Barrel distortion correction for the S90 in Lightroom 2.6 and ACR 5.4 are automatic. I used to selectively correct photos for distortion in Photoshop before then.

Since the original posting of this thread Adobe Camera RAW has been updated to support for the S90, including support in Aperture 3. You can correct for distortion via plugin in Aperture 3; the popular ones seem to be PTLens (I've read a lot of praises for this one), LensFixCl, and DxO Optics. You can also process them ahead of time in Digital Photo Pro before importing them into Aperture but that seems like a hassle to me to bounce between two programs.
