Question about
Use a DROID Phone as a WiFi only iPod Touch-ish?
So I have a friend that is selling her Droid phone (I believe it is a Droid Bionic or Droid 3. Fairly new ~6 months old and she said the MSRP was $600), and I may end up buying it from her. My question is, is it possible to use it pretty much as an iPod Touch for just WiFi only purposes? Will there be any complications? Will it constantly complain about not having a SIM card installed? I'm not sure if this is true for all Android phones (I know this wasn't always the case), but you can use any Android device without a service contract. I was able to activate my Nexus One (GSM model) without a sim card and my Nexus S 4G (CDMA) without having ported my number to it. I was able to use it just like I would a tablet, but have no cell service.
Previous versions of Android, I believe any 1.x version required that you connect and have a contract with a certain carrier. I know this was the case with the original myTouch 3G and Motorola Cliq (both GSM).

Well, as far the "sim card" thingy goes... if its a verizon phone, isnt it CDMA? Regardless, being it an android phone, no, it wont bug you at all; plus you could always disable the "phone" functions by rooting.
As far as using it as an mp3 player... Androids default MP3 player, honestly, Sucks. But you can always download DoubleTwist (wich syncs with doubletwist desktop), Winamp (also syncs WIRELESSLY with your winamp at home), Cubed (great free player), or my personal favorite, PowerAmp (4.99 on the market, if im not mistaken. theres a 14-day trial if you want to try it beforehand).
I suppose Id like to ask, out of curiosity, why not use it as your main phone? Not a verizon customer and just juping on oportunity?
Even if you dont end up using it as an mp3 player, id say if you can get a good deal, go for it. You can always resell it.

to the previous post, i just got a droid bionic. i got it free from a friend that didn't want it anymore. i just want to use it as an ipod touch as well. but it wont let me do anything on the phone without a sim. is there a way of getting around this dilemma? like rooting or something else without having the ability to use the functions of a regular android phone? cause right now all its saying is "insert sim card to operate this device" and its not letting me do anything else right now till i insert a sim card.
also is there a way of me getting a sim card from verizon and inserting it but not using it as my phone? wouldn't i have to activate it first and then only i could use it as a phone right?
i'm new with android and their phones so please excuse my stupidity on this subject.
all help is appreciated. please and thank you.
