Upgrading hardware

What do you need to do to upgrade hardware on a WHS if you needed to? For instance the motherboard or your main hard drive the OS is on. Back it all up and reinstall? In the case of the HDD can you clone that drive to a new larger one and everything still work?

I'll preface this whole comment by saying always back up before any major upgrade.
With a WHS box I'd pull the SYS drive, hook it up to another PC (eSata's best) and back up the disk using your preferred disk imaging utility.

Motherboard swap - is as dicey as any other version of windows, but should work.
You might run into activation issues after, so be familiar with MSoft's phone activation process.

SYS drive - the best way to do this is first use the BDBB add-in to back up your client backup database to an external or network drive. Pop in the new drive, boot off the WHS install DVD and when prompted select "Server Reinstallation". If you select "New Installation" instead of "Server Reinstallation" you will lose all the data in your drive pool.

Re-install the BDBB add-in, and restore your client backup database.
Here's a more detailed walkthrough of the server reinstallaion process -

Good luck.

Try not to answer with a question. Because that's not really an answer, right?
