Updating on a slow iMac

Hi! I have an iMac from early 2008 and it's a bit slow because I have so much stuff (photos) on it. It is currently running Snow Leopard, but I would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Is there something I should do before just updating to speed up or clean out my computer? I just don't want it to become even slower or to just carry over any problems it may have.

Hey,

Here is a solid start for speeding up a mac. It's a guide written by WIRED magazine. In your specific case, I think the section on recovering Hard Drive space will be the most beneficial.
