Has anybody tried it yet? I'm afraid to because I've heard about problems with phones bricking at the final stage of the re-flash.

No problems here.
Updated ROM installed, and GPS is indeed now usable by 3rd party apps.
Overall seems slightly crisper in performance as well, but that could be attributed to the new install.
