TSA regulations and traveling with the iPad

Alright! This magical, revolutionary, mythical, paradigm shifting, perfect, gorgeous device is nearly ready to be unleashed in just over 24 hours.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet: What will be TSA's policy for traveling with your iPad. Is it like a laptop, so it needs to be out of the case? Is it like a Kindle, so that it would be okay to leave it in a carry on bag?

It would seem to fit in the large electronics category, but I'm not so sure. To be fair, the TSA doesn't even consistently regulate security inspections for Kindles. Sometimes they want it out of the bag, sometimes it's okay for it to be in the bag.

From the TSA website:

"Effective August 4, 2007, laptop computers, full-size video game consoles (for example Playstation, X-box, or Nintendo), full-size DVD players, and video cameras that use video cassettes must be removed from their carrying cases and submitted separately for x-ray screening. Laptop computers and video cameras that use cassettes have long been subject to this policy.

What Needs to be Screened Separately
*Laptops
*Full-size video game consoles
*Full-size DVD players
*Video cameras that use video cassettes
*CPAP breathing machines
*Small and portable electronic items do not need to be removed from their carrying cases."

How do you suspect the TSA will treat this device?

I'm assuming they will treat it like a laptop. They often make me take my Kindle out of my bag as well, so it really just depends on how they feel that day.

Here we go!

"ATLANTA (AP) -- Apple's iPad tablet is friendlier than a traditional laptop when it comes to airport security.

The Transportation Security Administration said Tuesday that in general you should not need to remove your iPad from your bag. That's because it's relatively small and people who carry the device often don't have bulky accessories like plugs and external drives that clutter the image when computer bags are screened.

Screeners may still ask you to remove your iPad if they can't get a clear image of the device."

Doesn't sound to me like it fits any of those categories! Then again, neither does the kindle... Eventually, they are going to update that list and add some new categories, like tablet devices.

I'd probably just look at it similar to a DVD player and just set it on top of it's case.

I think eventually, maybe when the general public is more used to tablet devices, or maybe sooner - devices like the iPad will have to be taken out of their cases like laptops.
