So my beloved ZHD after a month of use is showing one sign of trouble. Twice now, the screen has stopped responding to touch, the device isnt frozen as i can still hit the home button and go to home screen. I have found that hitting the lock button on top and then hitting it again brings up the swipe screen and the touch starts working again.
Has anyone else had this problem?
p.s. i think both times this happened i was browsing the web...
that's got to be scary, hopefully it's something that can be fixed. Did you notice anything about which way you were holding the device? parrallel to the ground by chance?
that's definitely happened to me, but usually when I have an unstable connection. When I use the connection at home it never happens. However, the browser has been known (so far) to cause frequent lockups, which has been discussed elsewhere on this site. Hopefully when they release the rumored firmware update in November, they fix this problem, along with the other quirks in this otherwise awesome device.
I just bought mine about 5 or 6 hours ago and have had this problem constantly, would only work for about 10 to 30 seconds and then it would stop responding again. Posted my comments on the Zune boards at forums.zune.net/520474/ShowPost.aspx . Right after I posted my comments, it is working for the first time. I am still going to send it back for a replacement.
I have had this problem a handful of times also. I haven't panicked TOO much, because like you said, it can be fixed easily by locking/unlocking the screen. Dont know if the angle or the accelerometer has anything to do with it, but it has happened to me while playing a song and also while playing a game
Well its only happened twice in a month of use and i have a two year warranty through walmart, so if this persists I can always get a new one... we'll see.
Funny story, actually... see, I'm a musician, and I write songs and record them. Some of my old songs aren't very good, but I still have them on my Zune because I harbor this idea that one day I'll listen to one and find a way to improve it.
Anyways, I'm driving with my girlfriend and one of those songs comes on. I'm trying to skip it to save embarrassment, but the player LOCKS UP on me completely. None of the buttons work, the screen won't turn on, and I'm already driving and can't afford distractions. My girlfriend gets worried that I'll wreck because I'm fumbling with this device manically, so she grabs it from me, and what do you know, it works for her. I tell her to switch the song, but it's been playing all this time, and I'm only more embarrassed.
Another thing I've noticed is that the touchscreen doesn't respond for about a second after I turn it on every morning. I think it takes a bit to get out of sleep mode after you leave it there overnight or something. I can tell it's ready when I hear a "pop" from the speakers (it's hooked up to my car).
haha thats quite unfortunate. you know, compared to my blackberry storm, my zune problems are nothing. my storm froze all the time, my zune has hiccuped twice in a month of heavy use, not bad. All devices hiccup on occasion i suppose.
I had this happen to me at least once in the first week I've used it, where the screen will plain not respond to selecting anything, the main home button switching between the Quickplay List and the Main menu.
The only way to really get it working again seemed like a complete shut off and turn back on. Hopefully MS will have a firmware update to fix some of the oddball quirks of the device soon! :) Other than the quirks, I truly am in love with this little device.
Mine does it occasionally. It seems like a software bug. I noticed that if I hit the home button about 1 second after a new song starts playing (When the screen is blank), nothing happens. I have to click the power/lock button twice, then the screen pops back up. I'm guessing this will be addressed in a future firmware update.
I have had this happen more and more frequently lately. Its weird cause the touchscreen doesn't completely stop working. I can unlock the device and scroll up and down. But side to side swiping didn't seem to register. Then yesterday every aspect of the device worked EXCEPT the radio. I could scroll, swipe etc. But when I pressed Radio in the menu nothing would happen. Doing a reset (hold sleep button for 10 seconds) fixed the issue. But this is starting to get really annoying. I hope a fix comes out soon.
Yeah, my device has not bothered me a single time after those first couple freeze ups. Im inclined to agree that touchscreens are allowed to be, well, touchy when you first start using them. :)
