to macbook air 13 or to macbook pro 13?

i'm just about ready to retire my 15 inch powerbook G4. I'm on a limited budget and could only afford one or the other. The 15 inch macbook pro is outta my league for now. Any comments would be welcome

I'd go for the Air. It's not too far off spec-wise, so if you're using the computer for basic tasks, I'm sure the Air will perform well. The Air is also a lot smaller and lighter, thus more portable. Lastly, it has a higher resolution screen (1440x900 vs 1280x800) which is one of the more important things for me.

I think the only thing that would be a downside to getting the Air is the limited HD space. If you like storing all your files locally, this would be a deal breaker for you since the Air maxes out at 256GB.

It really depends on what are your needs right now:
- For CD & DVD support, slightly better processor performance, FireWire 800 port, go with the MBP;
- For better portability, better screen resolution, less screen glare, bundled SSD (lower storage, higher speeds), better performance on some kinds of apps, go with the MBA.

Obviously, what is one's advantage is the other's drawback...

I was in a similar situation 1 month ago and decided to go with the Air. I have no regrets whatsoever - screen is great, the SSD is blazingly fast, it is able to play fairly decent games (Portal 2, Starcraft 2, etc), and it has replaced my iPad as the computer that I take everywhere with me...

Please feel free to ask anything else - I'll help if I can =)

If you are going to get it today, get the Air. It has been reported that it is nearly as fast as the macbook pro.

I'd say go with the Air. Better screen, lighter, super fast SSD, better battery life, etc. All you're giving up are the optical drive and a few ports (and there are Thunderbolt adapters for most of them).

I'd say go for the MacBook Air (11" or 13") version, the only real disadvantage is the extra dongles you have to carry around for ethernet etc and the lack of a DVD which is no great loss. The air is also a lot more portable and the SSDs are stunning.

I'd go for the Macbook Pro ( i have the new core i5 mbpro) for these reasons:
-Can hold 8gb of Ram (for only 56$)
-is faster (with 8gb ram my geekbench score is 6600 as opposed to about 5400 of mba)
-more storage availablity
-no plastic bezel ( this is opinion but i think the Air's plastic bezel makes it look cheap)
-firewire 800
-optical drive though i rarely use it.

if you want a fully equipped gear like macbook pro, go get it. but if you want a slim, light (minus superdrive etc) and ready to go laptop, go with the Air.
of course if you still want a Macbook Pro, you could replace the hdd with ssd to gain another speed and less noise.
