Question about
iTyler

This may not pertain exactly to this product, but it's the one I own so I figured it's best.

Anyway, I've only owned this computer for about 6 months, so I assume it should still be under warranty. However even if it's not, I want to pay to get it fixed as it's driving me insane.

My iMac's hard drive has recently been running really loudly. It varies from doing so constantly, to only when first turned on, and launching applications.

What I've tried...
-- Reformat/install OSX
-- Running Apple's Hardware Test
-- Resetting SMC

So, my question is, would this be something Apple's warranty would cover? I've never had to deal with any Apple support before, so I'm new to this deal.

Thanks
Tyler

I would definitely return it to a store or an authorized Apple repair shop. Given the age of the machine, as well as the clearly audible noise coming from the hard drive, I do not believe that it will be a problem to replace it for free (covered under Apple's 1-year limited warranty).

Apple support is generally good about issues like this (one of the reasons for Apple's higher prices is superior support).

If you have issues getting a free replacement, I would either try another Apple store or an authorized apple repair shop.

Finally, before you take it in and in general, I would recommend that you create a full backup of your entire drive to an external drive (of same or greater capacity). I recommend using SuperDuper (www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescript...) which has a free version and allows you to create fully bootable backups in case anything goes wrong.

This way, when your iMac comes back with the new hard drive, you can boot off of the external and copy all of your files back over with SuperDuper. The one thing to make sure is to have your external drive formatted properly before you backup: Disk Utility ➞ select your external drive ➞ on the right pane, click on the Partition tab ➞ Options ➞ select GUID as your Partition Type ➞ click on the Partition button to format/partition your external drive as GUID.
