Thinking of getting this...

Thinking of getting the WD MyBook just so my wife and I can both easily access photos, videos, music and don't have to keep them on 2 separate PCs. Are there better options?

Do you want something that both you an your wife can concurrently access? If so, you might want to look into some sort of NAS storage device that connects to your network. This is just a simple external USB drive, meaning that it can only be connected to one computer at a time.

(I suppose this point is moot if you both use the same computer, so you can leave this hooked up all the time.)

If you're using separate computers, a better option might be to use something like a Drobo -- you can add your own hard drives as your data needs grow, and it simply connects to your network. That said, it might be a little pricier than you're looking for.

EDIT: Wrong product was tagged. It turns out, you were already looking at a NAS! Yeah, it's probably a pretty good solution -- and cheaper than the Drobo!

I looked at the WD, but decided to go with a NAS specialist company instead. QNAP, Synology and Netgear have been making great NAS solutions for years, and their highly polished web interfaces have tons of features. In my opinion, if this thing is going to hold all your valuable stuff, it's worth the extra investment.

My two QNAPs are set up to replicate essential files across the web (one is in my office), and I love this setup.
