Question about
Think we'll see a Nikon D700 refresh soon?
All the rumor sites seem to be talking about a new entry level Nikon DSLR aimed at consumers -- the Nikon D3100 (nothing official yet). Rumors say that it will have a 14 megapixel sensor.
Not to keep propagating the megapixel myth, but this gives it a higher effective resolution than Nikon's top of the line shooters (Nikon D700, Nikon D3, Nikon D3S -- which are all 12 megapixel). Do you think we'll be seeing any upgrades to the Nikon D700 soon? 12 MP is a pretty sweet spot for these cameras, but the closest competitor to the D700 is the Canon 5D Mk II, which shoots at 21.1 MP!

I enjoy the low MP count on the D700 and D3s. I suppose it depends on how you look at it, higher pixel density = worse low light performance. (hence 5D Mark II sux... maybe i'm just a nikon fanboy)
CES 2011 Jan 6th, maybe D800 +D4, :) wishful thinking... hope it comes true.

It's now Sep 2011 and I'm still waiting for a refresh. I'm currently using a D80 and I've been wanting to upgrade to full frame for some time now, especially since I got into taking pics of the Auroras and want a better sensor. Meanwhile I"m noticing that there are less and less D700s kicking around. I talked to some friends that work for a camera store and they said that Nikon hasn't been refilling their stock on D700. I figure I'm going to buy once the replacement D700 is out so I'm hoping this is a sign that one might be coming soon.

I don't think 24 is necessary, especially when aiming for the low light performance, which is what the D700 is amazing at. Resolution really is only an issue if you crop a lot or do landscapes. This is why the 5D MKII is popular for landscape and portrait photography.
Nikon is slower at updating their higher-end (FX) cameras. I can see them possibly making an upgrade to the D700 sometime next year though. Perhaps a small boost in resolution (14 does sound reasonable), video, better live view, and other small improvements.

There is a rumour about the D800 that is out... it should be coming in a month(delays due to floods in Thailand). It is suppose to be 36MP and cost $4000.
They really should be releasing something soon. Will have to wait and see.
