I tried that one some weeks ago. It was not able to stop peep etc. from launching. Unfotunately :( But if you don't set up a twitter account with Sense UI peep won't use any power as far as I know.

Hello zabihjan, my friend is on her 3rd HTC Hero due to network data loss also. Although the situations were very strange how she received network loss. She was using the original OS from Sprint, also the 1.5 and everything worked great. The I updated her system to 2.1 from HTC's site, everything was great, she felt that she got a new phone and was able to install from the Android Market. Then a couple of days later she lost the data connection, so no Facebook or net access. She could still MMS and use her phone though. I played around with it and wham, everything was back although I didn't do much except the usual things like turning it on and off. Then a couple of days later she would experience the same data connection loss again. We thought that the upgrade to Android 2.1 might have caused this loss of data connection. After contacting Sprint, we received a new HTC Hero with Android 1.5 installed. Guess what happened then? Data connection loss came back. So now we know that the upgrade to 2.1 had nothing to do with loss of data connection. We are back to square 1. The loss is not permanent though as it comes back eventually or by playing around with it. Fed up she's decided to get the HTC Evo and give this next and 3rd Hero to her husband.

I have the original Droid, Droid Incredible and the HTC Evo and I use Advance Task Killer(ATK in Android Market) that works to keep apps from continually being on and draining the battery(those pesky apps that use geolocation services). ATK can be set to autokill apps in various ways. It can also be specified to not kill apps that are wanted(for example to continuously play music in the background).
