The 16 GB SSD drive is full (mostly with Windows 7 OS); can I install the OS onto a MicroSD card and run it from there? or is there a minimal install for 7

Depends on your hardware. What type of machine are you doing this with? Not possible with a Mini 9.

Maybe look into a runcore or other SSD.

My runcore has been going strong since 02/2009.

There is also a Hitachi driver for SDHC that makes it behave like a HDD. If you want, I can dig up...not sure how easy to find on the internet anymore.
