Syncing problems with iTunes 9+?

I use my work laptop as my main iTunes machine, but it only has a 40 GB hard drive. So, I use an external drive to hold all of my music. I usually leave this turned off unless I am listening to music at my desk. Ever since I purchased the ipod (in September '06), I have plugged it in at the end of each day to update the podcasts (stored on the machine), and headed home. When the external drive is off, I would get an error message about not being able to find the music in the library, but that was it. Well starting last week, it is deleting all of the songs off of the ipod when the external drive is not powered up.

Has this happened to anyone else? The only thing that I can think of that has changed is that I've downloaded the newest version of iTunes. Is there another setting I may have changed without realizing it?

No, it is not iTunes 9. That actually happened to me a few months ago so I am very careful when I sync my ipod. If I see that there are more items that can't be synched to the ipod than normal I immediately check my hard drive and see if it is on or if it powered down by itself. Sometimes iTunes will erase your music if you are not careful. I have over 6100 songs and 6000 pictures, along with movies and podcasts on my ipod so I have use precaution.
