Spinwheel of death

I've had my computer for a while now, running great and whatnot until recently. I am a designer and have to use the entire adobe suite all the time. I used to be able to run three adobe programs at a time with minimal lag between them. Now I have a hard time even opening photoshop without it crashing and having the dreaded spinwheel appearing for at least a minute at a time when I just click the type tool in photoshop.

I did recently install snow leopard on the machine and didn't know if that might be affecting it, or if the computer is just getting old and ready to kick the bucket. Any help is appreciated!

Try running Activity Monitor while you are working and set the view to All Processes and then sort by %CPU. Then when you are experiencing performance problems, switch to it to see if there are processes hogging up your machine. You can do a web search for these or let us know what you find if you need a hand.

I had a similar problem a while ago where an Adobe registration service was running out of control and I found a patch for it. My machine has been running swiftly ever since. The name of the patch escapes me at the moment however.

Also run the Adobe Updater to make sure you're running the latest builds of your Adobe software. I'm assuming you're running CS4?

If it's just a problem with Adobe, I'd stick to what @liz says. I had a similar problem with a Mac Mini earlier this year, but with all programs crashing randomly. That turned out to be dodgy memory, so it's worth doing a system check and making sure your installed memory isn't in the process of dying.

Once I'd established it was a memory issue, I got a couple of new memory sticks installed and it all worked perfectly again.

I am currently running CS4 as you stated. I made sure and everything is completely up to date. I checked the memory and found out it's completely shot. So, time to order some new ones! Thanks for your guys' input on everything. I appreciate the help.
