Question about
Spin down, spin up all day long on my iMac OS X 10.6.1
My new 1Tb drive is plugged into my new iMac strictly for Time Machine backup duty. I have the power saving setting 'spin down hard drives when possible' turned on.
Throughout the day when the iMac is on, this drive can be heard spinning up and down constantly.
Is that OK for the drive? Or should I change the setting to not allow it to spin down?

I had so many issues with this working on my Airport Extreme via a USB hub. Actually, I have two of these tacked on there. I changed the firmware on the Airport Extreme to the previous version (I believe it's 7.4.1 but don't take my word for it) and I have had no problems with this now.
Is this hooked up using a USB hub or straight into the computer?

Straight into the computer. I assume it's normal, but a bit annoying :)

I have the same drive connected to a Mac on 10.5.x, and the same thing happens. It's very annoying because the spin-up/down is punctuated so loudly by the Samsung mechanism inside, and as you say it keeps doing it all day long. By contrast, I can hardly hear the one inside the Mac itself.
I believe the LaCie firmware specifies the spin-down time, so even if you don't have Energy Saver setting 'put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible' checked, the drive will probably do it anyway. Have you tried changing this setting?

I have the same issue, it's a bit unsettling to hear that loud spin up/spin down. I don't have it on all the time now, just when running back ups.
