Specifically about the GPS function, do you have to be connected to wifi to use the feature, or can you turn it on as you are moving around and get a location?

As I read through different reviews on this site and others, including the Samsung site, I could not get a feel for the useability of the gps function. I am interested in its capability of use during a bike ride or running and if used with android apps like "runkeeper" that I can use it to track my runs or trips on the bike or if I just wanted to turn it on and find my location is it going to do that. Thanks!
