It seems like the keys in the center of the keyboard are a bit less responsive than the others. I have to press extra hard to get them to register.
Did I just get a bad keyboard or is this a common flaw?

Had the same issue, had to trade out for another one. That one had the same issue as well, another trade finally fixed it. The entire process took a few months and 20+ phone calls, lenovo has that worst customer support I've ever experienced.
