I'm sure this has to do with speed and indexing to keep the phone feeling fast but that doesn't make it any less of a disappointment.

Annoying, yes. Of course I'm also a person who uses a 2GB sd card in their phone for music and everything else. So we'll see how it effects me (assuming I even get a WP7 device).

wow, then HTC must really be lazy. both HD2 and EVO4 had sdcard slots, yet this one which is based on both doesn't??

don't get me wrong I don't think I will ever fill my 8/16gb storage. However, I like to have the choice.

If I wanted internal storage only I would stick with my iphone.

It has nothing to do with laziness. The spec for WP7 (from Microsoft) does not allow for user expandable storage.

So at least blame MS not HTC :P

Microsoft's "specs" allow for EXPANDABLE storage via microSD card slot.
Most of the new HTC phones have microSD card slots.
You *CAN* replace the (assume provided) 8GB card with a 32GB card (for example) but you'll need to perform a hard reset afterwards and restore your phone's setup.

Samsung windows phone has micro sd card slot. It's not swappable, in the sense that you can't use 2 sd's to keep ur data. I hear you have to reformat the whole system every time you "upgrade" your storage.

I'm not entirely sure about the Samsung but as per the MS chassis spec states; If the phone has a microSD & the OEM allows the card to be removed, then you can replace it with a larger card... but yes you will need to hard reset the phone. Thing is, how often would someone replace the card? maybe once a year if they're geek but almost never, if they're normal consumers.
