Small, decent quality SLR or video with outboard audio?

My sister is about to embark on a project which involves a lot of travel through some fairly rugged and remote territory.

A vital part of the project is recording pictures, video and sound of the place, people and culture she encounters. So what would be the best camera to bring?

She'll be carrying everything, so it needs to be very portable and pretty unobtrusive.

The video quality should be no lower than 720p and it really needs the ability to accept audio from an outboard microphone for times when she is not running and gunning and is doing a more formal interview. Can anyone think of an SLR with microphone inputs.

Suggestions?

I can tell you right now that my Canon Rebel T3i does accept an external stereo microphone and I believe also has built in mono microphone as well.
