Sluggish performance, any tips/tricks?

Sometimes if I am using twidroid or the Facebook app and I press the 'Home' button it takes approximately 10 seconds to get back to the homepage. Other things I notice are laggy transitions, and subpar scrolling.

Any recommendations?

P.S I have task killer, and lookout mobile installed

I feel your pain. Personally, I don't find Facebook to do it much, but I have sluggish times here and there.
How often do you reboot your phone -- you will want to do that every now and then...

Do you have many widgets or background services running? When I had my Dream, I found performance was directly tied to how much I tried to have the handset do at once. For instance, if I had Pure Messenger, a weather widget, Mini Info's widget and Missed Call all running at once, it bogged things down to the point of unusablility. Add to that background updates for Facebook and Twidroid and you've got a recipe for a slow handset.

Ultimately, I had to break down and buy a Nexus One so I could use Android the way I wanted to. Otherwise, I just had to be very choosy about what apps/widgets/services I was running, task killer or no.

I rebooted the phone and it felt a lot speedier, so I guess I should do that every few days or so.

I only have 3 widgets: the search bar, power control and taskiller.

I think this is just a case of the G1 being underpowered for 1.6 even though it's only been out for a year and a bit. Every day it's feeling more and more like a prototype that was no way near ready for release.

My contract finishes in August and by then I'll decide whether to stick with Android, or possibly to change to another OS, all 3 of them looking very good (webOS, iPhone OS and WM7)

I *think* if your internal storage is filled up with apps/games, it might slow things down as all -- can anybody confirm if this limits the OS's swap file?
I freed up about 12MB of space and mine has been running a bit better. Not super-great, but it seems noticeable.
