Since it has a full size usb port, would it work with a 3G or 4G usb stick?

In my experiences with using 3G usb devices they've required some type of software or driver to make them work so you may run into trouble using it on an Android powered device.

A quick search has brought up this thread at XDA where someone is trying to do the same but with a Xoom. It looks like you need a kernel that has the necessary modules. This would mean needing to root the device to install a custom kernel. forum.xda­-developers.com­/showthread.php­?t­=1234312 You didn't specify which modem you have but you may try searching to see if the Thrive supports that specific modem out of the box.

I have 3gb that I got at a trade show as swag, it works with no issues in my Thrive.
