Should you put a screen protector on Gorilla Glass?

If your phone/tablet touchscreen is as tough as Gorilla Glass or better, should you still put a screen protector?

It all depends on what you do with your phone. Do you keep it in pockets with keys? Do you keep it out on the table, with the screen facing up? Do you wear rings or have long fake fingernails? Nailpolish? Do you poke at the screen with your fingernails, or do you use the pad of your finger? Do you throw it in your purse/bag and just let whatever else smash into it?

The biggest screen destroyer in my experience is keeping your phone in the same pocket as keys. GorillaGlass is tough, but nothing is impervious forever. And it's just asking for trouble if you ask me. Eventually there's going to be a weird angle or something where a pointy key is going to poke the screen too far and then disaster.

I have a Motorola Droid and I have never had a screen protector on it, and there are zero scratches on the glass. I keep my phone in my pocket by itself and my wallet and keys on the other side. I have dropped it a few times, but it just dents the case which is pretty substantial on it.

Also, a screen protector should really be called a 'digitizer surface cover' as it doesn't actually protect the screen just light abrasives from scratching the actual glass. If you have a protector on, and you drop it on the wrong surface on it's corner the impact wave is going to propagate through the glass on the thin edge where it's the weakest and crack. That's why most iPhones crack, as they have little to no bezel around to protect it.

It all comes down to personal preference. Traditionally, do you use screen protectors on your touchscreen devices? If you do, then you'll have no problem with putting a screen protector on Gorilla Glass for that extra bit of protection.

That stuff is strong but not invincible. I tried stabbing a Samsung Captivate with a ballpoint pen as well as a metal spoon and it still walked away with barely any scratches. So if you can live with a screen protector, I'd say put it on there just for the extra bit of protection. Some people simply like to feel the glass when they use their touchscreens and don't like the barrier.

I wouldn't bother since it's not going to add much protection and screen protectors have their crappy qualities:

- Sticky, gummy surface. If you get the more slick protectors, they have a weird matte finish to it that makes the screen look bad
- Pain in the ass to put them on perfectly (straight, with no bubbles or dust under it)
- Look ugly
- Expensive for what it is

That probably largely depends on how you treat your phone...I have an iPhone 3Gs, with nothing protecting it. It's basically still in mint condition. But I'm also pretty serious about keeping my phone safe. It gets its own pocket, and I'm careful where I set it down (and never face down).

That being said, how much you'll benefit from a screen protector is directly proportional to the condition of the screen on your last smart phone. My thoughts are that, if you have to ask, you should probably get a screen protector. It's certainly not going to hurt.

My Nexus One, which doesn't come with Gorilla Glass, had a screen protector since I bought it, because I want to keep my gadgets in mint condition for resell value and the nice experience of having a clean gadget. I actually changed screen protector twice (so 3 total) whenever it gets imperfections.

I removed the last screen protector, a Zagg InvisibleSheild, about 2 months ago and I don't regret it. Did it to finally experience a barrier-free touchscreen since my phone is aging. So far, I don't regret it. No scratches. Much nicer touchscreen experience.

Just want to make sure that I won't regret my decision of not putting a screen protector when I get a new gadget so I'm asking this question.

After watching all the stuff on the iPhone 4 where the glass panels crack easily, I started with a bumper. I figured that if it fell it would land on a corner, or it would land on the bumper and screen would never touch the ground. Then I dropped it a couple of times on carpet and one time on my granite floor and I realized that wasn't really safe enough, that I needed something on the screens.

For a while I had a case that protected the back without a screen protector, but didn't like how it made my phone bulkier and unable to use the dock. Finally I have settled on an invisibleShield by Zagg. They warranty your product against damage for life, the thing can't be scratched, they offer free replacements, and it coveres the whole device without adding thickness.

In the end, Gorilla Glass is a great marketing term, but it doesn't mean your phone's glass won't break. Protect it only as much as you see fit - if you don't care if it breaks, and you can just buy another one, don't protect it at all. If you rely on your device, and buying another one would be a pain for you, then protect it.

Good luck!

Seeing as you're concerned about it, why not, go for something of decent quality though. I just got a SGP Steinheil Oleophobic one and am very happy. Perfect fit and quality and I haven't noticed any difference in the responsiveness, it's capacitive after all.

I would not bother with a screen protector for a gorilla glass panel. It won't scratch or break easily. The screen protector will only impede the responsivness of the screen.

I put a Zagg invisible shield on my Xoom, but not for protection. For some reason that screen collected finger prints and marks like it was it's job. The screen was also way more reflective than I've seen. The invisible screen, while not the best looking (sort of makes the screen shimmer if looking at it powered off) it doesn't show finger prints as much, and some how made it less reflective. Every day I batter with myself if i should keep the shield on or not.

With my Epic4G I decided to not worry about glass protectors. I did not like how they detracted from the look of past devices. I figure at the rate in which we upgrade devices nowadays, by the time my phone's screen is beat up to the point where it is useless I'll just get a new device. So save your money on the screen protector and buy some cool apps with it instead!
