Question about
M3GSO

Should I Stay (With Windows Phone) or should I Go (Back to Android)?

I'm a very simple person, Give me lots of memory(preferably expandable) and a huge screen. Simple right?

I have a Lumia 900, and I love what it does, and I love it for what it isn't, an iPhone or an Android phone. The 920 seems to be the Best Windows available from launch day, but with only a 4.5-inch HD display, and 32GB sealed with no expansion. This doesn't seem that much different from my 900; except the obvious WP8, camera, etc...

Sounds like Android is becoming more, and more what I want in phone hardware, which isn't bad, because the One X+ looks amazing. I just desperately hate having a phone 1 out of 5 people in the same room have; which seems to be a trend with Android and iPhone. Help?

If what you want is a huge screen then I don’t think the iPhone is for you. Yes its 4 inches tall but it’s not wider and yes I think that does make a difference. The iPhone 5 is a great device and if you are looking to go into the apple ecosystem it’s the best phone right now.

On the plus side for the iPhone:
  • Large app collection both free and paid
  • Software updates come from apple and are not held up by the carriers
  • Annual hardware refresh, you won’t have phone envy a month or two after you buy the phone
The Android phones are great for people who like to have more control over their device. There are few aspect of the phone that you can’t change on android but you have a very large selection of hardware and there seems to always be a newer and better phone every month or so that trumps the “top phone”. But unlike with the iPhone the carriers and the manufacturers are involved in pushing out the software updates. This means you may have to wait months or in some cases never get the latest official version of Android for your phone.

On the plus side for Android phones
  • Large app collection both free and paid
  • Large selection of hardware. You are likely to find a phone that has all the features you want in the size you want since there are so many options.
  • Very few things on the phone can’t be changed so you can make the phone truly yours and unique just to you.
As to your question I would say stay for now. By the end of the month we should see some real Win8 phones and their reviews. Give them a shot and see if any of them let you not be part of the 1 in 5 with the same phone in the room. If you stay with the Win Phone you are likely to stand out as long as you are not at a Microsoft campus.

Also there are rumors going around about new “Nexus” phones from Google these would also be some good devices to look at before you make your final decision.

If you wanna stick with a Windows Phone, you could get the UGLY Galaxy S III clone, the Samsung ATIV S:

4.8" display.
16 GB internal.
microSD card slot.

Alternatively, you could get a better device, like the sexy HTC One X+:
4.7" display.
64 GB internal.
Not expandable.

Windows provides you much less apps for free than Android/Apple.
Windows platform is not yet optimized much in terms of power consumption and performance. Simply put, much choices out there.

Apple is more like a boring leader, restricting you everywhere in every term.
Android in that sense is more open and highly customizable.

You can consider Motorola Razr Maxx - good screen, battery, perf.

I would highly recommend getting the Samsung Galaxy Note II. It's specs basically put all other phones to shame. You also sound very disappointed by the screen size the lumia has (4.5). The Galaxy Note II has a large 5.5 size screen. The Note II may be larger, but if your a guy, you should still have no problem fitting it into your pocket. The can expand the memory of the phone with a micro SD card up to 124 GB I believe. The phone is also considered to be a phablet, the screen size makes it a cross between and tablet and a phone. Many of the features that come with the Galaxy Note II are awesome like S Beam, NFC, LTE, etc. Another reason why I recommend a Galaxy Note II is because it has become very clear recently that Samsung has been going beyond current generation phones and delivering more in terms of innovation. They are now pushing the boundaries of the mobile industry, while its competitors are rolling out similar features up to a year later.

If the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is too big, I would recommend the Galaxy S3. I'm sure by now you will have seen how well it is doing. Its basically similar to the Galaxy Note 2 with a smaller size.

I understand how you feel when you say that you don't want a phone that everyone else has, but having a popular phone can also have it's advantages. First off, some phones have features that work better with phones that are similar or the same. Also, a more popular phone can also mean that it is a better quality phone with great features. With Samsung, you have a wide range of phones to choose from. Let's get real, I highly doubt anyone is going to care about what phone you have, so saying you want to have a phone that isn't seen as much as another will only limit your options.

Don't choose a phone based on how popular it is, chose a phone based on how it works with your personality, and how it feels while your using it. Some people like Apple because of its easy to use OS, while some will choose Samsung for it's customizable options.

I'd go with android. The OS is much more functional, the customization abilities are amazing, and their phones are durable as heck! Plus with Android, the OS can reach it's full potential without having to Jailbreak!

It's really going to come down to personal preference. I've been with Android since the original Motorola Droid and it's been a pretty good experience overall but I'm ready to move on. So it comes down to the IPhone 5 or the Lumia 920.

The OS and hardware isn't why I buy a phone it comes down to 1. UI 2. OS stability 3. Apps. The IOS maybe boring for most users and the lack customization is another strike against it but it is fast and very stable. Just for the sake of argument I will assume the Windows Mobile will also be fast and stable. The live tiles are a great idea which gives it one up on the IPhone.

But the biggest difference here is APPS which I use extensively everyday and the IPhone wins that battle without a doubt. WM are missing the quality not quantity of apps the the IPhone and even the Android has. I've read reviews and looked at the apps available for WM and the results aren't good, at least not for me. I NEED APPS. Now maybe over the next 12 months things may change, but apps is such a big part in how I interact with my phone that anything now that just offers a good OS and hardware just doesn't do it for me.
