I would start with the Nikon D5100, skip the 3100. T2i is nice if you want to shoot Canon. I am a Nikon guy myself.

Honestly, they're both really great cameras. I went through a similar debate when I was considering my first DSLR. Personally, I went with a Nikon because more of my friends and family have Nikon cameras. And, if I ever wanted to borrow/trade/upgrade accessories, I'd have more available options. In the end, I did choose the D5100 because of the larger image sensor, extra video features, and it just felt right in my hands. The swivel display is also an added bonus.

As I'm getting back into the hobby of photography, I'm finding that more megapixels doesn't always guarantee a better image. Learning how to use the camera and its many features, as well as investing in better lenses and accessories (in time) will go much further than more megapixels.

I also think that the Nikon D5100 would be a better choice, like mtmra70 suggests. Both the D5100 and the 3100 use Nikon's DX formats, which allows them to use many of the very nice lenses Nikon makes. The T2i is a really nice camera, but I would choose Nikon's higher-end offerings over Cannon's every time.
In other words, I think that I would rather buy in to the Nikon system with one of their cameras than the Cannon one.

I have a 500D (T1i) and love it... if you have nothing and need/want it all Nikon has you covered for less money.
I like the idea of a 1st kit being 18-55, 55-250 and 50mm for lens, and bag for gear that is on-back or a shoulder bag, and a tripod that will last you past your 1st body.

They're both good cameras, but the T2i is better to start off with.

As a Canon user, I feel that

- Cheap Nikkor lenses offer better image quality than cheap canon lenses (DX lenses vs. EF-S lenses), and they are cheaper! Nikkor 18-55 DX is far better than Canon's EF-S 18-55, in my opinion. And canon's EF 50 f1.8 is nothing compared to that of Nikon's 50 f1.8 G.

- While nikkor lenses are either cheap or very expensive (Nano), Canon lenses are more well-spreaded i.e. they have lenses with middling quality but also have somewhat affordable prices (like EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 which I think better than Nikkon's 12-24mm f4.

- However, I think canon offers a wider choice of lenses you might want to play with, even though some lenses you might think they don't have the purpose to be existed, lol.

- And video shooting is far better in Canon than Nikon :)

It depends on how you want to use your camera and which accessories/lenses you want to have. They are both nice systems.
