Question about
Seriously considering moving from an iPod to a Zune HD, I'm on a mac, any advice?
I currently use an 8gb 3rd gen nano and I'm running out of space, now that the HD has(unofficial) mac support a refurbished 16gb is a viable option. I'm wondering if there are any quirks with the hardware or software that I should
know about before taking the plunge? Comaptibility with itunes formats, comparison to the latest iPod touch( I know it has a much poorer app selection and browser, also no retina display) and anything else that might be good to know. It's only about $120 refurbished compared to the $300 touch, I figure if I really hate it I can save up for the next touch this fall.
This is really the only media player I'm considering at this point, unless there's s super cheap android device that I'm not aware of. To be honest I'm most worried about losing my play counts( I follow them like the stock market) but it's about time I free myself from iTunes' shackles.

If syncing on the Mac is anything like it is on Windows then you're in for a treat compared to iTunes and iPod syncing. Once the Zune software grabs any content on the pc and a zune device is connected it just goes ahead and syncs it quickly, transcoding on the fly if a video/music file is not playable on the zune by default. While I'm unsure if the integration is that deep on the Mac side I can say the device itself is pretty awesome, even though it's a solid year old right now. The itnerface is light and snappy, and it's navigation of your library of music, videos and podcasts (audio and video) is great. I like being able to simply tap an artists name while a song is playing to drill into that artists songs/albums, and the quick volume access on the side is nice eventhough the normal interface is fast enough that you're not really saving time etc. Battery life is pretty great even when viewing some video during the day, compared to my first gen touch it is amazing in this area.
I can't comment on apps, since I live in canada and the marketplace here doesn't include them but if you're buying a Zune HD you're prolly someone that just wants a good dedicated music/podcast player and none of the BS other stuff that media players today seem to have been collecting. The only 'all-in-one' device I'd get these days would be a windows phone7 only because it literally has a zune HD inside of it, though the Zune HD hardware is still pretty sexy to me.
SIDE NOTE: Should should spring for a 64gb, I was using the 15gb touch for a long time and my music collection is just over that. it's really really nice to be able to just sync all your music, podcasts and any videos right onto your device without having to pick and choose.

Just to let you know, the best feature of the Zune HD is Zune Pass. It's $15 a month and you get unlimited downloads of just about anything you could possibly want. Also, each month you get to download 10 DRM Free songs to keep forever. It's an amazing way to explore new music and then keep the stuff you really like. The fact that you get to actually own 10 songs every month makes it much more valuable than other subscriptions. I honestly can't express how awesome it is!
