Question about
Samsung Galaxy S II or Samsung Focus S?
I'm really torn between these two devices. I love the both of them and the features they offer. One thing is itching at me though, do I want the Galaxy S II so I can tinker with it? I'm really not sure.
So put yourself in my position, with love of both of the devices with a focus on tinkering, WP7's fluid UI and Music player and Android's accessibility on Linux [it's what I boot into most days, but I do have Windows for gaming and such]. While I know a bit about Android right now, I've really never gotten to sit down and really just play around with a real Android device and get a feel for it while I have gotten a feel for WP7 and owned a Samsung Focus [which was stolen in July].
What would you pick?

I agree that Android devices offer quite a bit in the way of tinkering. I also agree that even without rooting it and putting custom roms on it, etc, the Galaxy S II is a really good phone even if TouchWiz isn't the best skin out there.
Like you I owned a Samsung Focus for a while because I heard all the great things about the UI of Windows Phone 7 and wanted to try out something different. As an OS, WP7 is really quite good. It's innovative, runs smoothly, and looks great. Unfortunately, fewer people seem to developing on the WP7 platform right now. There are a few good apps out there for it, but not enough to sustain the average smartphone user, especially if that person has used an iPhone or Android phone before. It's too bad for Microsoft that they rolled WP7 out so late, because right now it's a two operating system game between iOS and Android.
I would wait for Windows Phone to mature a little more and enjoy the Samsung Galaxy S II in the meantime.

If I were you I would go all thay way to Galaxy S ][ . If you will allow me to do this pararelism with your hobby [tinkering] and changing roms [tinkering on sofware level ;) ]which xda will allow you to do this. Even without roms Galaxy S][ is one of the best phones around.

Thanks for the answer! I ended up picking up the Galaxy S 2. I've had it for a couple days and so far I love it. All the tinkering I've done and just the software as-is is great!
By the way, your english pretty good!

actually, why not jump to the galaxy nexus instead? its a newer model, plus you get new rom updates straight from google when they come out. I do have a galaxy SII though, if I didn't had it already, I'd go for a Galaxy Nexus.
And then you get to have Icecream Sandwitch on it, I've already played with that, and seems much better than the current gingerbread 2.3 OS.
