Replace my late-2008 MBP with 2011 MBP?

So I bought the first-gen Unibody MacBook Pros back in 2008. It's a 15" 2.53Ghz Core 2 Duo with 4gbs of Ram.

I've been thinking of getting a new MacBook Pro, also 15", with a nice Core i7 CPU. I'm unsure of when Apple will give it a nice update, so I'd like to hear your thoughts on whether I should hold on or just go for it?

I would definitely go for it. They were updated earlier this year and will not see an update until at least next year. The most recent MBPs have the newest processor (I don't think Intel is set to come out with a newer processor any time soon) and should be good computers for quite a while.

I'm in the same boat as you, and I found that with 8gb ram (50-60 bucks with easy install)
see here: gdgt.com/question/is-it-possible-to-install-8gb-of...

and a Momentus XT 500gb + 4gb SSD hard drive (99 bucks)

I'm able to do everything I need without needing to upgrade to a new laptop. I'm waiting for more substantial upgrades to force my hands, and until then, just using my old unibody, which still looks brand new, and speedy, if not blazing. I mainly use my machine for web (50+ tabs regularly), email, movies, light photo editing, and parallels (win7/winxp) and with the above upgrades, nothing feels sluggish, but parallels and editing isn't blazing fast either.
It's fine for me, as a new mbp would cost 2k and probably be overkill. Your needs / mileage may vary.

Regarding the update cycle part of your question, check out the Mac Buyer's guide.

I always consult that site whenever someone asks me if there will be new hardware updates.
Currently the new MBP has been out 156 days (Avg = 215).

Hope this helps with your decision making process!
