Power supply issues

I LOVE the product and the sound it produces. But most of the production runs featured a bad capacitor in the power supply circuit that caused the radio to abruptly die within 6 months (twice!!!). The second replacement supposedly had the newly improved power supply. But it died within 5 months of entering the home. This problem is rather widespread-- you can confirm this if you visit Roku's support forum.

To the company's credit, Roku did replace the unit at no charge on both occasions. I've had the second replacement for a couple months now and my fingers are crossed. I love what it does and how it sounds and can't bear to live without it.

My Soundbridge Radio also had a power supply failure. It was out of warranty.

I found that an electronics repair place in Texas has made a specialty of repairing the power supply, in a way that prevents it from failing again, for around $90. I sent the radio to them, and it is now repaired.

The Soundbridge Radio is rather unique in its feature set, including both an alarm clock and internet streaming radio. I chose to pay for a repair because I could not find a suitable alternate device.

Mine also died once and Roku replaced it. But I've since moved on to the Squeezbox Boom from Logitech which I prefer because:

- It allows access to music services where you need to log in, like last.fm, pandora, live365, radio-io etc.......

- Podcasts. You can browse and instantly start streaming podcasts

- Configurability. The Squeezebox is INSANELY customizable via its settings page accessible via a web browser. You can configure exactly how it behaves (if you want to).

My Soundbridge died 6 months after the texas guy replaced the supply. I gave up and bought another new one.

As a matter of coincidence, I had to send in yet another one that died. This time it took a year. I am picking up the replacement today.

In the past year I bought a Logitech Squeeze Boom and I have a feeling it deserves its reputation for quality and durability. I miss using Firely as the media server, but the SqueezeServer software is not bad at all and has been updated at least twice in the past year. If I were to advise friends today, I would recommend the Squeeze products. Besides it's pretty clear that the Soundbridge series is no longer a live product line. Roku has other fish to fry.
