Question about

Potential Successor?

I've been researching this tablet heavily recently. But as technology is, everything is outdated by the time it hits store shelves. Does anyone have any idea whether Sony will be releasing a sequel to this with the same brilliant form factor and higher specs?

I didn't want to buy one unless Sony will not be releasing an updated version and will support this beyond their Ice Creams Sandwich update that's coming out soon. Especially because for my purposes I would be investing in a couple docks (home/work) and an extra power cable for second dock.

There are rumours of a successor with Tegra 3. But there will always be rumours:

Also, I think Sony is hit-or-miss for delivering long term software updates for their products. The 2010 Sony Xperia X10 launched with 1.6 and it took forever to get 2.1 then 2.3, it will not get 4.0
The 2011 line of phones is getting 4.0, but probably nothing after.

When buying a device, I find its best to look at its current feature set and not its future or promised feature set

Sony knows how to innovate. They know how to design beautiful devices. Software and sales are their weaknesses. I think that a successor will be released, likely late 2012 or early 2013. I really want a tablet S as well and though I just bought a Vita and plan on getting the new iPad I would consider this product if it were $200. I like the form factor, the fact that it can be used as a portable gaming screen with a PS3 controller for PSP games, etc.

I don't know how getting movies on the device is since I often transfer movie files to my PS3 and sometimes format is an issue. I also don't know about battery life and the app selection since I am an iOS user. If I were you I would set a budget for the device, a price that if it dips to you will purchase or otherwise wait for 2nd gen. I haven't been able to get my hands on the device, partially due to many of the Sony stores in my area going under. Check out the reviews on Amazon for more informed critics.

PS The Vita rocks!
