Question about
phone building/ geek phone
Just curious about the idea of building is still alive and what have happened to it. I am sure many geeks would love to do that, same as building a pc or such?

Building a PC is easy because all the ports and hardware have standards. (USB, PCI-E, Molex power adapters, ATX... I could go on)
These standards allow for parts to be mixed and matched because you know they will be compatible with each other. I know my DDR3 ram will fit in the DDR3 slots on my motherboard.
The reason we cannot do this with phones is a lack of standards. Heck not everyone can agree on a nano-SIM card standard (Remember Apple, RIM, Nokia all fighting not that long ago?). There are manufacturers that still use proprietary ports and docks.
Also, the sheer size of phones doesn't allow for this. Memory and processors are soldered to the "motherboard" if you will to save millimetres, which are important considering the size of the average phone nowadays. There is no way an average user can make something as thin and refined, while still keeping it customizable and upgradeable.
Thirdly, and finally, there would be no software optimized to run on a generic combination of hardware. Manufacturers tweak Android, iOS6, Windows Phone 7.5, and BB OS 7.1 to run the best possible on their specific hardware, including optimized battery life, less lag, and better application performance. This optimization is not possible when hardware is determined by the end user.
As much as I would love to build me a phone customized to my wants (Large battery Razr MAXX style, 12MP sony camera) It will never happen :(
