Question about
Overheating (aka poor performance) solution discussion
First of all by overheating I'm referring to the consequence of poor performance not burns or fires.
My macbook air (late 2008 version) suffers from degraded performance a lot due to overheating when plugged-in or unplugged. Any video (hulu), game, or virtual machine (VMware Fusion) causes this problem. Most multi-tasking also. Basically anything other than browsing the harddrive or internet.
I'm wondering what solutions people have taken.
These are the few bits I've found on the topic. I'd love to hear about any solutions that have worked for you.
Overheating causes:
-fans blocked (directly under monitor)
-charging
-not using product as designed (x-code+external monitor www.scribd.com/doc/14238829/MacBook-Air-Decision)
Solutions:
-cooling pad
-cpu throttling

My MacBook Air doesn't overheat, the fan is always runnine fans running at 6200 RPM all the time when minimum to no CPU activity is happening. I don't see any decreasing is performance though.

You can slow the fans down if you want, more details here.

As for performance problems. I can bring mine to its knees every time by using Skype and Audio Hijack Pro with a USB mic. Can't say that is "not using as designed."

Try this.
Shut down MBA, unplug power adapter, do SMU reset, turn MBA back on. Leave power adapter unplugged, test functions. Plug adapter back in, try SMU reset again but now with power adapter plugged in. Only do this part with adapter plugged in if first time wasn't a go. We also concluded the power adapter and restarts have a big thing to do with the performance and if you come to experiencing a bug like super speed fans, jittery video, overheating.

I'm really worried about this overheating problem on the MBA. I have a 13" Macbook Unibody that I just upgraded to 4 GB of Ram. I'm thinking about upgrading to an SSD later this fall. I was going to buy the MBA, but now I'm not so sure. I've read lots of posts about overheating. One thing I like about my current MB is it still has the express card slot and I can keep spare batteries. Plus, easy access to RAM and the Hard Drive. Ok, maybe I don't really want the MBA.
