Check out this thread on the m1330. I commented on my experience there already: discuss.gdgt.com/dell/xps/m1330/general/anybody-el...

I have one of the Dell m1530 laptops and it does get very hot.I combated this by buying a Belikin laptop cooler with fan which really cools down the laptop alot.

I had this issue, and got a Dell engineer to come to my home and replace the motherboard and fan - it still seems hot to the touch sometimes, but never irritable and not nearly as hot as it used to be.

I believe Dell are very well aware of this issue - they sent out an engineer extremely quickly, without the usual hassle of email after email. I was still within my year warranty, so they replaced it free. If you're persistent enough, since it's a known issue you might be able to get it for no cost even if you're out of warranty.

I've got a close friend who works for Dell RMA/Replacement field parts and service. I've one of their 17"' laptops, and I asked him about these and the 1330's some months ago while we were replacing some parts in my 17", and he told me the ONLY one of all the latest laptops that was build as rugged as mine was the Inspiron 9400; all the XPS (except 1710) were junk, and overheat and die more than any other laptop he's ever worked on or replaced.
I was thinking about upgrading to one of the 1530's or even the smaller 1330 (a friend has a 1330 and loved it, but only had it a few months before it was stollen) but after listening to him and asking questions about problems they have with both the 1530 and 1330's, I decided I'd never ever get one.

In short, those particular models of Dell are to the laptops as what Hyundai was to the automotive industry through the 1980's and 1990's... Garbage.
If you have one that is stable and works well, keep your fingers crossed. He said they have over a 90 failure rate of a major component every few months; sometimes more and sooner...
!!!

I'd recommend you lap the HSF/heatpipe and CPU top, and the GPU as well, and monitor those temps. Replace the fans with something more durable and keep it off surfaces that allow the temps to build up from lack of airflow.

Too bad huh? Such nice looking machines!!!!

I might have to get some parts replaced. An idle temp of 62-75 degrees is not good at all.

I have the m1330 and it was constantly overheating and a general mess (still is). They had to replace the entire bottom half at some point (palm rest, bottom cover, motherboard, heat pipe assembly (x2), new bios update etc. There are definite problems with both models and this issue. I would pressure Dell for some sorta solution.

my m1330 is the best laptop i have ever had.. i am using it since 1 year.. and yes.. it overheats damn a lot hahahahahaa... and in some cases it shuts down like if i use it crazy.. 8 - 10 hours of video and youtube, internet... but its a perfect laptop.

i have no solutions for it lol.. a cool pad would be a good thing to go with, but i haven't tried.

Well the coolers work, but it is hard for me to take one of those to a class where I need to be quiet.

They have some very goot silent coolers now, and yes my M1530 gets extremely hot, I'm not sure if I should just get a cooling pad or request new parts. Not even gaming, just using Chrome or Safari my temps can hit 55-75 Celsius. Basically it gets to the point that skin will start to get very irritated if you even touch parts of the laptop directly. This something I might wanna be worried about?

My M1530 did the same thing, and I did heavy programming on it on a regular basis. I didn't invest in a cooling pad, but I was careful to make sure the bottom ventilation was never obstructed. I never had a hardware problem with it.

So far no hardware issues, maybe I'll get a cooling pad that allows more ventilation as well, just to keep things running smoothly. I've grown to hate Dell honestly, from now on I just build my own systems, I find it's a lot better than paying these ridiculous "brandname" prices.

The laptop pulls air in on the bottom and blows hot air out the back. So long as I am careful not to block the input, I have no issues. The latest BIOS update runs the fan more often though, which I hate.. That is supposed to thwart the failure of the NVidia video card.

Yes, I've got this problem too - internet or games like COD4 - yep, check. But it really isn't such a problem 2 me.

I had a motherboard fail due to heat issues--still a problem on the rebuild but it hasn't failed yet.

Still ,running L4D, not even 1/2 as hot as my MacBook is playing a video... A MacBook will make you sterile..

Mine is currently in Dell's repair station somewhere in Texas getting the motherboard replaced. Darn Nvidia 8600 chip on it has a bad die and overheats during games.

I have an M1330 and experienced the heat issue. I ended up sending the unit in and paying for the $200 heat sink option. Seems to stay cooler but not happy I had to pay to resolve the issue. Dell did not admit there was any issue only that some of the M1330s experienced a similar issue and this was the fix.

Old thread but I'm sure there's still a lot of M1530 users, or any Dell users that use a Nvidia 84xx/86xx graphics card. The issue is the card, they're bad, the entire line is bad, been reading article after article and forum posts EVERYWHERE for it, sure someone also linked it above as well.. So replacing parts for these same parts, would be redundant.. :/

when i bought this laptop, the idle temp was 75 and when I played bioshock the 8600 was 100~105. that was insane. Dell changed the MoBo and it happened the same 70° idle. They changed the MoBo again, after a BIOS and video drivers update. the idle temp is 40~45° and with MW2 is 75°. Not as bad (i think so, have no idea what is the average). Update your BIOS and your video drive.

P.S. if you don't need the heavy-dute GPU, try Dell's 1420. We have a few we got used off ebay, one with IGP and one with a 8400 GPU, and they've falled off trucks, out a 3-story window, gotten pulled off the table and flown across a room from dogs and kids, and still going strong. Maybe one of the BEST out there, but especially THE BEST of the Dell laptops. I've had Dell laptops for over 8 years, and apples and toshibas and IBM and Sony. If you're going Dell, try to find either a 9400 or for smaller, an Inspiron 1420. XPS 1710's are really nice too- rugged and cool running too.

our 1420's are as good as our old IBM T-22/T-40's. The friend who lost their 1330 bought a 1420 and loves it more.
Not as flashy, but far better built and far more rugged.

if you m1530 is overheating i might be because your heat sink is dirty. I was having this problem and took off the back cover and blew out the fan with some canned air. when this happened some dust flew from my xps. after a boot my comp would now stay around 60 degrees at idol where it was around 65 before. Try it. it might work.

My m1530 has been heating up recently when I started playing games like AA3, MW2, BC2. The internet connection would get dropped after a while and the entire backside of the laptop would be very hot to the touch (but actually felt pretty nice during the winter times to keep my hands warm). I usually have to repair the wifi internet connection to reset it. Tried connecting via LAN to a wireless bridge also resulted in internet connection drops during gaming sessions.

Also, the palm rest metallic surface started to chip - like the paint is corroded away. Anyone else experiencing these issues? Can Dell address these issues even if it is out of warranty? Will try cleaning the fans if I can get to it. Not sure if this is Win7 specific.

I've had my XPS 1530 (with faulty nvidia 8600GT) for over 2 years now and it has consistently overheated and crashed on me during numerous gaming sessions. I twice sent it back to Dell under an extended warranty and they replaced the CPU (not the problem) the first time, and did nothing the second time despite me constantly referring them to articles about the GPU being the problem. I gave up after that and decided that Dell would never sell me a gaming machine as long as I live. They make fine office machines so I'll still get them for work, but I'll never again buy anything from them I want to play games on. FUCK them.

I had this problem with this model as well. It would crash constantly when I played games, even sometimes when I had my cooler under it. Eventually it just bricked one day and I just gave up on it. Just build a pc for home or get a iPad. (I was a huge pc fan but this thing is awesome and am getting a Mac when my comp dies)
