Alright, got the battery today. It includes a new back plate to make room for the new battery, and this is the feature I really like. There's no more lip at the bottom of the phone, so the back is now flush with the piece that has the speaker on it which feels 100x better in my hand.

At any rate, the battery life seems markedly improved. I haven't gone through a full charge cycle yet, but I'm already noticing better battery life (as would be expected from a 350 mAh jump). The NFC also works. All in all, feels worth the $53.

Do you know if a Case Mate Barely There case will still fit?

I'm pretty sure it still would. I was borrowing the Case Mate from a friend, but traded it out for an Incipio Feather. The feather doesn't envelop it completely but it still stays on the device. The Barely Three seemed to have a little bit more room than the feather. Not entirely sure though.
