Options for insuring iOS devices?

This weekend, my girlfriend contacted her insurance agent at State Farm to inquire about adding her iPad 2 to her renter's insurance agreement. It turns out, they've just changed their policy. The insurance agent mentioned that they are no longer insuring iPads and iPhones, because "for every dollar collected in insurance premium, State Farm was paying out $2 in insurance claims." (Crazy!)

So, what are options for insuring your expensive iOS devices? I've heard people suggest SquareTrade, but I've also heard some uninspiring stories about them as well.

You can insure your gadgets?? I know my phone has insurance through VZW(I forget how much extra per month) but I didnt know you can do it through a state farm or anything.

yeah, the insurance you buy from wireless carriers are a rip off. I used to work for Cingular and it was like $5 a month per, and either $50 or $100 to get a new phone. I don't believe that AT&T is even offering phone insurance for the iPhone.

Yeah I think mine is ridiculous too but my parents got it anyway, But I find it worth it because the cost of a phone out of contract is ridiculous.

Does Apple Care count as an insurance of sorts? You can get Apple Care for pretty much every Apple product you buy when you purchase it: www.apple.com/support/products/
Though if you're concerned about theft coverage don't think Apple Care will help in that situation.

Nope. Apple Care is a warranty, not insurance. It covers things like problems with hardware defects. Cracked screens and other potential damages (whether you're at fault or not) aren't covered by Apple Care. This is where renter's insurance came in handy, since it covers damage / theft of your possessions.

AT&T has had insurance for the iPhone for years now, but it's just as much of a rip off as with any other carrier, maybe more.

Squaretrade is much better than any carrier insurance.

Interesting. I was able to insure my iPhone 4 through my insurance company for dirt cheap. I guess that was about 8 months ago though. Maybe another insurance provider can help?
