Now that the Xperia Play is official and we've had a week or so to digest the news, what are your thoughts?

I really think this thing is pretty "meh." Really, it's just a generic Android handset that has a built in controller (which *is* nice for games) and plays older PSone games. Whoop. I was hoping for more!

I'd be more excited for this if there were games on Android that could actually take advantage of the hardware buttons. Unless having d-pad enhances the Angry Bird experience, I think we'll be waiting for a compelling reason to lust for this phone.

I was never intrigued by the Play. It looks okay, but nothing great. The Arc on the other hand...beautiful.

Considering I started doing mockups of an Android powered PSP2 back in 08.. I am excited. Right now it is a competent Android phone that can play games worth more than 2 minutes. That to me at least puts it over every other non-dual core phone available now. QWERTYs are useless to me now with Swype and its copiers.

What's exciting however is the strategy, not really this hardware. I think it is clear that they plan on moving real games to Certified phones. Why else would they be emphasising the fact that every PSP2 game can be played with just touch, or with controls? Who buying a PSP2 is really a part of the casual iPhone crowd strictly?

Plus I get my two interests meshed into one. I graduate this month and now I don't have to chose between specializing my qualifications in getting a job with SCEA for PSP2 games, or with a developer for strictly mobile apps. I can keep going with what I've learned for Android, and move over to real gaming.

This one of those cool but aimed at a specific segment of the market type of devices. It's similar to the LG Optimus 3D in that one shouldn't consider buying it until the content arrives. I've heard that the PSOne store is not going to launch until later this year.

I think that having original playstation games is enough to make me be very excited about this. Those games will be great with the hardware buttons and will be more than enough to keep me happy with this as a convergence device.

I like PS2 for Ratchet and Clank and games that are similar (never owned a portable). But I'm glad that Sony pushed out of its normal "everything-must-be-proprietary" paradigm. I'm also glad that they are not absolutely insisting that you must buy a Sony Phone and a Sony Portable.
I really like that games are available via both Android and iPhone platforms. Though it is different and new to use a touch screen to play these games its still not as responsive or familiar as the classic controller.
I won't be purchasing this as I have no games and no time, I sincerely appreciate this -- what seems to me to be best and most natural -- move for a mobile phone/ gaming console.

Since 90% of the time I'm using my phone it's to play games i was really interested in this phone. Once I knew it was coming to verizon i sort of lost interest. Now I see I can get an unlocked version with AT&T bands from Negri, and I'm back to being interested! Now I just need to see if it can play netflix, and start saving up a little bit.
