Nike+ and iTunes 9

I have been using my iPod Nano 2G with Nike+ for over two years now. I have the latest firmware installed on the iPod, and I've noticed a gradual degradation of performance over time. I forget when this first started happening, but at some point, after docking and uploading my workout data, the device would hang on the next attempt to play a song or podcast. My routine was to run the evening before and dock the device that night. The next morning when I get in the car for the commute to work I would plug it in to my Belkin FM transmitter / charger, choose the song or podcast, and hit play. On the screen, I can see that the transition wipe from selection to the track play view has wiped in by about 5-10 pixels, but then it hangs. I have to use the center button + menu to reset, after which it plays fine. This has been going on for about a year. Earlier this year, when docking the iPod on Vista x64, I started getting a notice that the device was corrupt, would you like windows to scan and fix. I read up on this, and it was a fairly common issue, and ignorable. The device continued to operate as before.

This week I loaded up iTunes 9. After a run, I can see my run in the Nike+ history on the iPod. When I dock the iPod, no data gets uploaded and the Nike+ history gets cleared. Am I alone in experiencing this issue, or is this happening to other iPod Nano 2G owners as well?

My wife is having lots of problems with her nano syncing with different computers in the house. She can only sync it an upload the data to itunes (then Nike+) from one of the three computers. She is having the trouble of her nano freezing during runs, but that might be moisture from sweating.

What I'd like to advise people who are reading this to please be careful using the Nike+ with Nanos. Over time it is rather likely that the attachment of the Nike+ receiver to the dock of the Nano can cause some damage (this happened with two of our Nanos). The symptom of this damage is this: When you attach the receiver to the Nano, the nano does not sense it's presence. The Nano can still update with Itunes, and can still charge, but does not notice the receiver any longer. I eventually went to a touch 2g because of the built in receiver and my wife bought another Nano (3rd darn one in the house). I posted about this numerous times on the Apple support site and it kept getting deleted. I asked Apple to look into the issue and they told me it was not an 'emerging issue' When asked how an emerging issue is decided upon, they said posts on the forums. Naturally since they kept deleting my posts, it will never become an emerging issue.

Be aware. If you use Nike+ a lot, perhaps buy the apple care rape (warranty) because that is the only way they will even consider repairing the damage this official 3rd party peripheral may cause.

I am experiencing the exact same freezing problem with my nano 2G. It's been going on for quite a while now. Like you, I have to do a hard reset every time I finish syncing the nano with my PC. I also have the Nike+ kit, but have not used it in some time. So I cannot comment on any data loss there. Is there any way to prevent the loss of data from my run history before trying to upload a new run?

I'd like to isolate the problem to either iTunes or my iPod. Clearly my iPod can record the run history, it is something with the interaction with iTunes that is causing it to both lock up and erase that history. Anyone have an install for an older version of iTunes that I could load up in a VM to see if the problem tracks with the device or the software?

My 2nd-Gen Nano is now synching runs again. I'm not sure which of these steps was the fixer, but here is what I did:

- Upgraded to iTunes 9.0.1.8
- Synched with one run stored - Device failed to synch and the run history was erased
- Clicked the Restore button
- Synched again
- Went for a run
- Synched - successfully uploaded the run

I'm still getting reminders from Windows everytime I dock the device that it wants to scan and fix the iPod, but I'm cancelling these without issue. Not sure if that will help anyone else, but I'm happy mine is recording runs again.

I'm glad that's working for you. My wife is giving up and we're headed out this evening to the sporting goods store to buy a Garmin FR60 watch (which has a shoe pod)

I just found this thread, but have had the same problem for a couple of years. I've never been able to nail down the sequence of actions that cause the problem. It seems to the status of the Nano (on or off) when the receiver is removed, synced to iTunes, then reattached. I've become resigned to rebooting the Nano when it locks up.
