Never bought a xbox 360 because I heard that they all break down due to heat issues. Did Microsoft fix this with the new slim xbox 360?

The issue you're referring to is the Red Ring of Death which has pretty much been a non-issue since the 2007 models.

Like frankspin said, it is no longer an issue. You can be 100% comfortable buying the console.

Ive had my xBox 360 elite for over a year and never any issues with it however I will say this the majority of people who have come to me with RRoD or other xBox issues for me to fix have stated these common things...
1) they invariably used illegal roms on their xBox
2) they invariably play nonstop for a lot of hours continuously gaming

What have we learned ?
a) Dont use bootleg roms on your xbox go buy the disc or get gamefly
b) give your poor xBox a break say after 3 to 6 hours and interact with real humans in your life
c) go outside and meet some real humans

Every non slim model I have ever seen/owned has eventually gotten the red ring of death. That's everything from the original one to the elite, halo edition, 250gb edition, hdmi, etc. They all break down. However, this problem is no longer present in the slim model.

I have only owned my xbox for about 6 months now and have had no "red ring" issues. I have the 4gb slim and the only real issue is that if you keep it in an enclosed entertainment console (glass front) it will get a bit loud from time to time. The fans(s) spinning up to cool it off. But on that same not I have run the console for more than 24 hours at a time between playing games, netflix, and streaming movies with the windows media center and have not seen any hicups.

It's actually the PS3 that breaks due to overheating, the Xbox 360 used to break even if it wasn't overheating, but that at least isn't a problem anymore. Aside from being more prone to scratching your discs, the new 360 isn't any more likely to fail than the PS3 now.

the only major problem I've encountered with the slims is the dvd drive errors. If you get that you'll need to send it in to microsoft, or pot tweak the laser yourself, which isn't very hard to do.

I never had any issues with my Xbox and I have had it since 2008. No RROD and such. I will have my games freeze rarely but never happens. Only time it has happen was in Mass Effect 2, Crysis 2 (ironic enough), and Fallout 3 but the issue occurred once on each one of them 40+ hours of time on them.
