Netflix Instant Watch Streaming issues?

Until recently, I've been a very happy Netflix subscriber with my Instant Watch disc. However, in the last couple of weeks, I can't seem to get the Netflix Instant Watch feature to work. Basically, when I put in the Netflix disc into my 40 GB PS3 and select the "Netflix" icon, my PS3 seems to constantly spin the disc as if it is having trouble reading it.

The PS3 reads my other Blu-ray and DVDs fine. This seemed to start happening after the last firmware update. Anyone else having this problem? I'm going to request for another disc from Netflix and see what happens. I'll post an update when I try out the new disk.

I've had the same problem. It seems to be a reproducible problem when I turn off the PS3 with the Netflix disc in it. I assume it's got something to do with the drive spinning down with the disc in it.

The only workaround I've been able to muster is to wipe the disc every time that happens. Usually one or two attempts at wiping and reinserting seems to make it work

Update on this situation:

Well, I ordered another Netflix Instant Watch disc and everything seems to be okay now. Strange. Maybe a recent firmware update rendered the old disc inoperative.... Who knows.

It's probably not the disc... I'd try to disable the internet connection to the PS3 and put the disc in and see if it at least recognizes the disc is in there. If it does then reconnect the connection. If that doesn't work I know it reads other discs but I'd try to clean the lens.

Keep us posted!

@TinyGrasshopper - Interesting. Wiping down the disc seems to work for me, once in a while. I wonder if there is some kind of manufacturing defect that is causing the disc layers to come apart after a while. The PS3 can get pretty hot after extended use.

@nizzy - I tried disabling the internet connection first. The PS3 does recognize the disc. Basically, the Netflix icon pops up under the "Video" section. I actually get an error code this time and a message about how the disc can't be read. I accidentally closed the message before I had a chance to take the code down. Next time, I'll take it down and post it here.
