I'm planning a trip to Maine in October and using the trip as a way to finally upgrade to a recent camera. I was originally looking at the Lumix-LX5 or Canon S95 but seeing as I'm going to be Maine I'm thinking I may need to consider something in the micro 4/3 category so I can use interchangeable lenses. I feel that the LX5 or S95 may not have the range for some longer shots if we're on a boat tour or hiking. I've been told if I'm going 4/3 I should just consider going for a DSLR but when looking at comparison pictures of the Lumix DMC G3 and DSLR there is definitely a size difference. This fits well into my desire for something on the more portable end.
The four cameras I've narrowed it down to are:
Lumix LX-5
Powershot S95
Pen E-P3
DMC-G3

Having had the GF1, a micro 4/3rds camera, for a while. If you're concerned about portability, I'd say it's not really an option and should have probably opted for a dSLR instead. With a lens attached, it's not really portable enough to casually carry around, though I here that the GF3 is significantly smaller in size, but if you're planning on getting more lens, then the smaller size wouldn't really matter much. If you want a micro 4/3rds, I'd probably go for the E-P3, since Olympus has a better EVF than the one that's made for the Panasonic cousins (note: the GF3 doesn't have a hotshoe).
Although, somewhat smaller, I feel that the G3 on the other hand is basically the size of your average dSLR (or rather I'd treat it in the same manner as a dSLR), since you still need two hands to hold it for getting a proper image and will probably need some type of camera bag or strap for it.
The S95 is what everyone recommends to people who want a really awesome quality point and shoot that can take great low light shots and is pretty pocketable. From what I've read, the LX5 is on par with the S95, but just more expensive.
